idk how i ended up thinking about shel silverstein today. i think he visited my elementary school once. i had a signed book but it’s long, long gone.
anyway, i was mad about the uhhhhhh… criticisms? i saw of The Giving Tree as I was reading about him today. My rant went as follows:
I bet if the tree put a ball-gag in her mouth and had him [REDACTED] all of the unmarried relationship experts wouldn’t mind it so much.
Yikes, this is literally just like Joker and Harley, and like Voldemort and Harry’s Mom who were banging in my head-canon!! You see, Harry’s Mom (or Mum, if you’re living in the United Kingdom instead of stupid, stupid ‘Murica, amirite?) also gave and gave, and all Voldermort ever did was take. It goes without saying that Voldemort is the bad guy, just like this stupid little evil monster Boy who just takes everything from the tree!
Anyway that’s the tea.Me, a Genius 2020
is that all? i think that’s all. like, it’s a TREE.
EDIT: AND I UNDERSTAND IT’S ALLEGORY. YOU’RE NOT AS SMART AS YOU THINK YOU ARE FOR BEING ABLE TO APPRECIATE THAT. IT DOESN’T EXCUSE OVERSIMPLIFYING THE STORY AND BOXING THE KID INTO “BAD” AND THE TR–OK im sorry bye
YOU CAN USE THIS STORY AS A TOOL WHEN READING IT WITH CHILDREN. TRY TO COME UP WITH MOTIVATIONS TOGETHER, FILL IN PIECES THAT WEREN’T SAID. I JUST– I DONT KNOW. I JUST DON’T KNOW, I JUST — you know what it is? I see hot takes by certain people (redditors, etc.) and I instantly have to disagree. So fine, maybe Shel Silverstein really was just like, an evil schmuck who wrote an irredeemably selfish character into a story and the story has no value at all. I can really believe that and im sooooooooo sorry.
