MY OH MY I HAVE FOUND YOU—sry, what was I doing… top 10 vidya huh? Okay, I’m just gonna DO IT. it’s still a WORK IN PROGRESS, but hear me out:
vast, beautiful world, so much fun to explore. Plenty of side-quests and mini-games and collectables and secrets (Egoraptor was wrong) Now that I’ve finished Zelda 1, I can safely say that the Boomers are just completely wrong. The single point I will grant is that you obviously *start playing* Zelda 1 much faster and there’s never a break for cutscenes. And that’s it.
Also you can go fishing. What an amazing game.
Silver’s the one I got so it’s the best. Lugia is best legendary.(actually kidding, I am a big Ho-Oh respecter). Many improvements over the first games even beyond “bigger and better!” stuff, it really does *feel* a bit more alive than the first gen, despite being largely the same. For example, the uh… events, like the bug-catching contest being held on certain days. Stuff like that, which does *literally* make the game more… alive just because the days of the week aren’t all identical. It also added day/night cycles(something removed in the next gen, which should have been punished by death) and a PokeGear with a phone so you can collect phone numbers. Especially GIRLS’ phone numbers. I used to pretend a Lass was my gf. Jk she WAS my gf and after I beat the Elite Four we got married.
The way the game looks at night is absolutely GOOOORGEOUS
It’s also double the freaking size of the
Red/Blue, containing the entire original region. Also in Crystal you
can finally play as a girl. I never did, but isn’t she cute?
I like her hat.
Mysteries like the Ruins of Alph were spoOoooky. There was just so much to *do* in this game, despite it being mostly linear. It really felt like such a vast world. (an awesome mod called Crystal Clear actually *does* make it open-world be removing HM-barriers)
The remakes, HeartGold and SoulSilver were after my time, maybe they added enough QOL improvements to deserve this spot, but I really like how the very simple pixel graphics used to look. Idk about this

face. That’s the problem with “improving” graphics, the more
detailed something is the uglier it can become. But I’m not being
fair, I’ve barely played those remakes.
Personally, I was never HUGE into Minecraft, but I did play it a fair amount. And I know it has to be somewhere on this list. Typically I’d stay close to the surface and make a giant farm and/or wheat field. My best world ever I had a giant chicken farm with an army of wolves protecting it. But people do all kinds of wild and creative stuff in it. I’ve thought about this a little bit—idk how good it is for kids’ development to have a directionless sandbox, uh, it could be *bad*. But that also has nothing to do with the quality of the game, and before it became bloated trash with creepy Communist splash messages, it was a great game; pleasant-looking, relaxing, fun to play with friends, with limitless possibilities. Afaik around 2018 is when it started to become trash with performance issues and idiotically-designed mobs like stupid things that fly around at night so you can’t enjoy a nice comfy outdoor tower anymore.
4 for 4. It was the move away from the tank-controls that so many people loathed. Now, movement STILL isn’t especially fluid LOL but it was a big step. Some people resented the move toward action over horror; but for me? Nothing is scarier than a chainsaw. Nothing. Besides, the gunplay is INCREDIBLY satisfying, and there’s a LOT of guns to choose from and upgrade (Red9 chads rise) I was in some—lol this was a long time ago, but I randomly tuned in to this black guy’s stream of his first playthrough of the game and he was asking if he should go for the Red9 or idk either the Blacktail or Punisher, and someone gave some midwit reason why they’re better and I’m like NOT SO FAST so I typed out an essay in chat about why the Red9 is the more efficient weapon (I can’t remember exactly but I know my reasoning was sound, because I am myself.), and he’s like Daaaaaayum this guy knows what he’s talking about! So true!
There’s also the ATTACHE CASE, the greatest thing ever; inventory tetris is itself a deeply satisfying game.
There are some COMPLETE BULLSHIT quick-time events, but largely the game is just a nice steady pace of you moving forward and blasting zombie Spanish people. UN FORASTERO! The game is freakin LONG but the pace is consistent. And for horror-lovers, there’s still plenty of bosses that are freaking nightmares to fight or run away from. And the newgame+ options and MERCENARIES really let you have a ton of fun. YOU CAN PLAY AS HUNK, the best character in the entire series.

I do think the game hits a nice uh… balance between action and horror. A lot of the stuff far into the game is just as scary as anything in the previous games.

idk yet where I want to put Halo 1, or FEAR, or Dragon Quest V(which I am insisting is better than III), or Kingdom Hearts—if it is going on the list. Dark Souls might make it on, I really don’t know yet. It WAS good enough for me to play through it like 4 times or something. But is that the game being good, or is that me being mentally ill? A lot of the late-game REALLY isn’t good at all. Well, whatever. Maybe by the end of the year I’ll have my list finished.
