Continuing Westward
Look, let’s just get it over
with already.
It’s… idk, I think WWI, and 2
guys land their plane in… where? Some smol village. Because
their plane got damaged.
The villagers are all spooked by
them. Tribal desert people, no electricity, etc.
They use that to their advantage
for some food and water. When they’re done, the chief’s
daughter goes into their tent with them.
The two randomly pick who goes
first with her, and our protag loses and has to wait on the other
side of the tent.
His friend and the girl go at it
for hours before he finally hears his friend make a strange gasp.
The girl visits him next.
As he—I really can’t do this
justice, he’s basically going Sherlock Holmes while he’s
having sex with her, trying to figure out how she killed his
friend.
Eventually he realizes there’s
a weapon in her hair (it’s done up), he goes in and pulls a
knife out of it.
THINKING QUICKLY, he gags her and
ties her up, and peeks out of the tent to make sure the villagers
aren’t coming yet.
KK good. He lifts her up and
books it back to the plane, throws her inside his friend’s seat
like a piece of luggage, and he takes off.
He reassures her that they’ll
come back eventually—oh btw she doesn’t speak English. But
uhhhh, she’s chill for someone who just murdered a guy. She
just nods.
I’m so tired.
Anyway, he looks back down at the
ground and sees his friend in his underwear chasing after them
lol.
She didn’t stab him, it was a
perfectly-normal gasp that you might make after having sex with a
village girl for 4 hours.
Anyway he keeps flying away,
continuing Westward. He’ll come back for him eventually.
There really is nothing quite as
satisfying as a Gene Wolfe story where he gets the girl in the
end.
Slaves of Silver
is the next story. It actually is
a Sherlock Holmes story. Basically. Our narrator, who is the
Watson character, comes to check out the Sherlock’s apartment
after seeing an advert requesting a roomie, and of course is
immediately suuuuper impressed by what a genius he is and decides
to live with him. I can’t remember which one of them is the
robot, it’s been a few days since I read any of it. IT’S COOL
THO because it’s just a closet but it EXPANDS through space.

Anyway SOMEONE’S STEALING
ROBOTS and they go down to the hall to check it out. I’ll let
you know what happens 😪
