Dragon Quest

I’ve been playing Dragon Quest since I was a wee lad.

My parents first got me Dragon Warrior I & II and later III on the Gameboy Color, and I actually managed to finish I. I wouldn’t finish II and III until I was an adult, and I wouldn’t even play any others until then too. All my nostalgia comes primarily from 1 and a bit from 2, which is partially why I played all the fan-translated NES/SNES versions, combined with my hatred of the English localizations, but that’s another topic.

So hereeee’s my shortish reviews of the series.

Dragon Quest I

simple, perfect. Get stronger. Buy better weapons. Save the princess. Perfect ending.

Dragon Quest II

A little complicated, much longer and harder(shut up) than 1, but still comfy. Sometimes too confusing, though. Also, the princess you save is your cousin so

Dragon Quest III

deep RPG, great stories, customizable party and hero, but exhaustingly long. Really awesome stories though, like saving a Japanese village from a snake demon. No romance, so you have to just imagine all the girls in your party(you didn’t really take any men besides yourself, did you anon?) are your harem. Your character canonically breeds in the end though, so that’s nice.

Dragon Quest IV

5 stories in 1, the pace isn’t super consistent but it’s got great characters, and like 3, neato little sIiIiiIde stories. At one point you get to play as a wholesome married wagie going to work every day. Has a great ending. My definition of a great ending involves romance.

Dragon Quest V

a perfect journey from childhood to fatherhood. There will never be a Dragon Quest game better than this. There’s enormous pressure from financial institutions to never even try to make a story like this ever again. Obviously perfect ending.

Dragon Quest VI

a completely schizo journey across two different worlds. Convoluted and confusing. Everything rough about DQIII is multiplied x2. My least-favorite game in the series so far, but it’s still very good. NOT A GREAT ENDING, but not TERRIBLE.

Dragon Quest VII

The longest Dragon Quest game? Even longer than VI. Less confusing, but overstays its welcome. Hard to get into because it basically consists entirely of side-stories. Idk if I’m even halfway done with the game and I can barely remember anything that’s happened.

The PS1 version is the last Dragon Quest game to not censor Crosses and “God”.

Dragon Quest VIII

???

Dragon Quest IX

???

Dragon Quest X

Japan won’t let us

Dragon Quest XI

Gorgeous, fun, straightforward

Monsters?

better than Pokemon
